Marc Barra joined Ullman Sails Hawaii in August of 2008. He is a fourth generation sailor from San Diego, California and credits his grandparents with teaching him to sail. He sailed Sabots, Lasers, Snipes, Lightnings, and many other dinghies and keelboats in San Diego and on Mission Bay. Marc would go on to run an Olympic campaign in the 49er. During this time, Marc worked as a sailmaker for Star class legends Mark Reynolds and George Szabo, building one-design sails.
In 2001, Marc and friend, Ty Reed moved to Hawaii as part of their 49er Olympic sailing campaign. During this time, Marc worked with sailmaker, Tom Andrews on big boat sails. Although he continued his 49er campaign on the mainland, Marc always considered Hawaii his home.
You can catch Marc on the water, racing his Hobie 33 “Yellow Dragon”, or on a number of boats in the local sailing scene. Marc designs and builds sails for many local cruising and racing yachts and has won many of Hawaii’s largest regattas. In the loft, Marc is the lead sail designer and manages day-to-day projects and activities. His enthusiasm is contagious and Marc is always eager to share his knowledge and experiences.
